Volcano Aragats

Aragats is the tallest mountain in Armenia, boasting four peaks (north, south, east, and west), with the highest summit reaching an elevation of 4095 meters above sea level.

Aragats is a stratovolcano, with its most recent eruptions occurring during the Middle and Late Pleistocene epochs. Springs, rainwater, and melting snow form numerous mountain streams that originate on its slopes. In recent times, Aragats has become increasingly popular among adventure enthusiasts for hiking excursions. Hence, many tour agencies include this destination in their packages, and below you will find all the necessary information if you wish to embark on a hiking trip here.

Technical Details for Climbing Aragats: Mount Aragats is situated approximately 80 kilometers from the capital city. Considering the weather conditions in the region, the best season for hikes to Mount Aragats is from May to September. You can organize a day trip or
a multi-day journey with a couple of overnight stays, depending on your preferences and experience.

For a relatively easy ascent, choose the Southern peak, which stands at an altitude of 3900 meters. More experienced hikers may opt to summit the highest peak at 4090 meters. When planning your hike, ensure that you have all the necessary supplies in your backpack: sunglasses, sunscreen, a water bottle, and other personal items. Hiking Mount Aragats: First and foremost, enlist the support of an instructor or guide familiar with the route. The ascent of the mountain begins from Lake Kari, located at an elevation of 3200 meters. The easiest way to reach the lake is by car. The hiking trail spans approximately 5 kilometers, and the walk takes between 2.5 to 3 hours.

The trail difficulty is moderate, so being a professional is not mandatory for ascending the Southern peak. If you enjoy hiking, this trip is suitable for you. Once you reach the summit, you will be amazed by the panoramic views. Mounts Ararat and Ara will be visible to you,
weather permitting. The sight of the crater will leave an indelible impression, and the beautiful fields of nearby villages will stretch out before you.

Continuing Your Hike: If you wish to extend your journey, you can proceed to the Northern peak. However, in this case, you should plan to stay overnight at the campsite. Continue your hike to the saddle between the Western and Southern peaks of the mountain. Upon reaching it, you will see the camping area specially designed for ascending the Northern peak. Set up your tent, prepare dinner at the campsite, and sleep under the starry sky. You can begin your hike early in the morning. The distance to the summit is 5 kilometers. However, you should know two interesting and important facts about the Northern peak.

Most travelers only reach the false summit, as the last 30 meters out of 4090 are very dangerous and difficult to overcome. So, if you want to climb the real Northern peak, be sure to take a highly professional instructor with you. The views from the Northern peak are majestic and breathtaking. On a clear day, you will be able to see endless expanses around you, and the three peaks of the mountain will impress you with their grandeur. After enjoying the views, descend from the summit, reach the first stop at Lake Kari, and return to Yerevan.

Mount Aragats is magnificent in its grandeur and power. Anyone who loves hiking and visits Armenia should climb this mountain. Aragats is located near the capital, and its summits offer stunning views. You can also combine your ascent of Aragats with visits to several other attractions, such as Amberd Fortress or the Byurakan Observatory.
