Ararat Arch – A Unique Architectural Monument

There are places in Armenia where nature's beauty, man-made works of art, and the memory of great people who have forever etched their names in the golden annals of the country's history harmoniously intertwine. One such extraordinary place is the Ararat Arch, or Charents Arch.

The architectural structure was built in 1957 by the outstanding Armenian architect Rafael Israelyan in honor of the 60th anniversary of the classic Armenian writer Egishe Charents. The writer, poet, and translator fell victim to Stalin's purges of the 1930s, leaving Armenia and the world with a unique literary legacy filled with endless love for his homeland and its people.

The site for the arch, located in the village of Vokhchaberd at an altitude of 1,500 meters on the road from Yerevan to Garni, was not chosen by chance. Charents had visited this place in the past, admiring the views of the mountains and the ancient Ararat, drawing inspiration for his work. The architect himself once climbed the pass, saw the stunning landscape, and decided that this would be the site for the Arch, dedicated to both Ararat and the poet Charents.

The architecture of the structure is simple: a cubic arch, 7 by 4 meters, with two semicircular openings of 3.5 meters in radius and 5 meters high. The building, made of red tuff and basalt, is crowned with a gable roof along the eaves.

At first glance, there may seem to be nothing extraordinary about the structure, but this changes as you climb the steps to the arch and look through it into the distance – toward the majestic Ararat and the valley, the sky with floating clouds, and mountain ridges stretching into the infinite expanse… And here the magic begins: the arch becomes a stone frame, and the landscape framed by it turns into a picturesque masterpiece created by Nature itself. The scene changes every second – and remains forever beautiful, like the snow-capped mountain at its center, like the sun in the sky, like the heavenly river above… The immortal beauty of Armenia is celebrated in the words of Egishe Charents, engraved on the eaves of the Arch under the roof:

“Of mountains older than Ararat, there is no light, none like it!

Like the inaccessible path to glory, I love my mountain, Masis!”

Opposite Charents Arch, tourists can also see the White Cross made of stone.
