Jermuk Waterfall – a natural pearl of Armenia
What could be more wonderful than water streams falling from a height and the eternal noise of water rushing over the rocks?.. These thoughts arise when looking at Jermuk Waterfall – one of the most beautiful natural attractions of Armenia. Thousands of tourists come to admire the fall of the pure glacial water from a considerable height.
Interesting facts about Jermuk Waterfall:
- Located in the southeast of Armenia, on the territory of the resort town of Jermuk, at an altitude of over 2,000 meters above sea level;
- Water flows from cliffs about 70 meters high;
- The streams of the waterfall have an unusual appearance: thin, winding, like a girl’s loose braid, which is why the second name of Jermuk Waterfall is Mermaid Hair or Mermaid Waterfall;
- The water of Jermuk Waterfall has long been attributed healing and even magical properties.
Legend of the Mermaid Waterfall
Such a poetic name for the natural object did not arise by chance. There is a beautiful legend about lovers who lived here in ancient times. Many noble young men were in love with a girl of extraordinary beauty, the daughter of a nobleman living in a castle among the mountains, and they sought her hand, but always received refusal. The beauty, however, had long loved a simple young man – the son of a shepherd, poor and unknown, but brave and handsome. The love was mutual, but no one knew about it. Every night, the girl lowered a long rope from her window in the castle above the gorge, by which her beloved climbed up to her.
But all secrets become known, and the girl’s father learned about their love and meetings. His anger was so strong that he cursed his daughter: he wished her to turn into a mermaid and remain in the water forever if she met the shepherd’s son even once again. The headstrong girl ignored her father’s words and the next time lowered not a rope, but her long hair to the young man. At that very moment, the curse came true: the girl became a mermaid, and her beautiful hair turned into the streams of the waterfall.
