Alexander Spendiaryan National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre

The Alexander Spendiaryan National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, affectionately known as the Opera by the locals, is a cornerstone of Yerevan’s cultural and artistic life. Officially inaugurated on January 20, 1933, with the premiere of Alexander Spendiaryan’s opera Almast, the theatre has since become a symbol of Armenia’s rich musical and performing arts heritage.

The building was designed by the renowned Armenian architect Alexander Tamanian, whose vision combined the elegance of neoclassical architecture with the grandeur befitting a national cultural institution. Its façade and interiors reflect a harmonious blend of Armenian artistic motifs and classical design principles, creating a visually stunning and culturally significant landmark in the heart of Yerevan.

The theatre houses two main performance halls: the Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall, seating 1,400 guests, and the Alexander Spendiaryan Opera and Ballet Hall, which accommodates 1,200 spectators. Both halls are equipped with state-of-the-art acoustics and facilities, allowing the theatre to host a wide variety of performances, including opera, ballet, symphony concerts, and special cultural events.

Over the decades, the Opera Theatre has staged countless memorable performances, featuring both Armenian and international artists. It has played a pivotal role in nurturing local talent, producing world-class opera singers, ballet dancers, conductors, and musicians who have gained recognition both nationally and abroad. Many of Armenia’s most celebrated composers and choreographers have premiered their works here, making the theatre a living archive of the country’s musical and performing arts history.

Beyond its role as a performance venue, the theatre has become a cultural landmark for visitors to Yerevan. Its grand halls, ornate interiors, and meticulously designed stage spaces reflect Armenia’s commitment to preserving and celebrating its artistic heritage. Throughout the year, the theatre hosts a diverse program of performances, from classical operas and ballets to contemporary productions, festivals, and international collaborations.

The Alexander Spendiaryan National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre is more than just a building; it is a vibrant cultural institution that embodies Armenia’s dedication to the performing arts.
